How Living in a Large City can help you save Money

Posted on Friday, April 13, 2012 in Real Estate

Some people may think that living in the city is a high end way to live and only intended for those with broad budgets. But in fact, the opposite may indeed be true. While there are some aspects of living in the city that may seem costly, there are actually plenty of ways that you can cut costs by living in a large city

For starters, take into consideration the transportation aspect. If you live out in the country or the suburbs area, you most likely have to commute 5 to 10 miles to reach a store or restaurant. For those who live even deeper in the country, they may have to drive 30 or more miles just to reach a Wal-Mart. For those who live in the city, they can hop in their car and be at the store in less than 5 minutes thus cutting down gas costs enormously. But even more conveniently, some people can skip the whole hop in the car part. Living in the city allows you to walk to a lot of different places. If you live in one of the Austin luxury condos in Texas you may be located in close proximity to your place of work.

High-rise living such as downtown Austin condos can be a way to save money as well. While you can own your own home, you don’t have to pay extra for up keep and repairs. And if something breaks, you can call up maintenance and have them fix it for you.

Another affordable aspect of city living is that many times, property taxes are less. If you have a large home in the country with several acres, the property taxes will most likely be through the roof.

While some bigger cities may seem like there will be a higher cost of living, take this into consideration.  If you are living in a small town with only one grocery store, that store can in turn charge anything it wants for its products. And it is no problem for them because if people want convenience, they will visit their home town store and buy whatever is there. The same thing goes for hardware stores and other businesses. In small towns, there is no competition. In big cities there is so much competition that companies have to have lower prices or sales to survive. As far as restaurants go, there are so many of them, they can’t all be fancy and over-priced. In the city, some one is sure to come in and start a restaurant that is aimed at a clientele that can’t afford as much.  So while it may seem like some things are priced higher, remember that where there is competition, there has to be sales.

While this is not specifically a way to save money, we will touch on the subject of making money. The job market in large cities is obviously more abundant than in smaller ones. Plants and factories are placed in big cities and it is not as hard to find something in your line of work as it may be in a rural town.
